An Open New Year’s Letter from Executive Director Brian Alexopoulos
With so many people sharing their New Year’s resolutions, I thought I’d ask a few residents here at Laurel Circle, a lifeplan community in Bridgewater, NJ, for their wellness plans and advice for their fellow seniors in the coming year. Here’s what they said:
- 1. Stay connected with your friends, family, and the world. Isolation can lead to depression and a decline in physical and cognitive health.
- 2. Keep moving your body. If you can, work with a fitness trainer or physical therapist who specializes in helping seniors build and maintain strength and flexibility.
- 3. Stay curious. Learn new skills and try new hobbies. Play music, learn a new language, make art, write, start meditating, or try a new type of fitness class.
- 4. Keep contributing to your community. Get involved. Nothing gives you more sense of purpose than helping others. Don’t forget to ask for help when you need it.
- 5. Find ways to have fun every day.
While their advice was meant for their senior peers, I found that quite a lot of it applied to people of all ages. Happy new year!
